Finding the Perfect Fit: A Guide to Custom Matting
Adding a mat to your artwork doesn’t just provide a professional finish—it protects the piece and gives it room to breathe. To help you choose the right frame and mat combination, we’ve put together this quick guide on how our matting sizes work and what to expect for your final display.
Understanding Mat Widths
The width of your mat is determined by the size of your print. This ensures that larger pieces have a substantial border, while smaller pieces aren't overwhelmed.
| Print Size | Mat Width |
|---|---|
| Up to 9x12 | 2" Mat |
| 10x10 to 20x40 | 2 1/2" Mat |
| 22x26 to 30x40 | 3" Mat |
How Matting Affects Your Frame Size
It is important to remember that adding a mat increases the total footprint of your frame on the wall. Because the mat surrounds the image on all four sides, the overall frame dimensions will be larger than the print itself.
Small to Medium Prints: Typically increase the overall frame size by 4 to 5 inches.
Large Prints: Typically increase the overall frame size by 6 inches.
Example: A 20x24 print with a 2 1/2" mat will result in a total frame size of approximately 25x29.
