If you are having difficulties getting ACI Flex to launch (even after reinstalling) you may want to try our back-up version, otherwise known as the "Problem's launching" version on our ACI Flex download page.
This comes as a .jnlp (java web application) file which runs through the Java software installed on your computer. In order to run this version of ACI Flex, you need to have 64-bit Java installed on your system.
We will start with installing on a PC. For Mac instructions, skip further down in the article!
--- Installing on PC ---
1. On your PC, search for Add or remove programs - or open your Settings and navigate to Apps & features
2. Search for Java by typing it into the search bar or scrolling through the list of installed programs.
If you do not see any Java program installed, skip to step 4.
3. Make sure the Java you have installed is 64-bit.
- It will specify if it's 64-bit in the parentheses
- If it says Java but does not specify 64-bit, that means it is 32-bit and will need to be un-installed
- Please note that it is possible to have both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions installed on your computer. This will cause issues - you want only the 64-bit version to be installed.
- If you do have Java (64-bit) installed, and have uninstalled any 32-bit java versions, skip to step 7.
4. In your web browser navigate to https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and click the link to download 64-bit java. The download should start immediately.
5. Find and open the installer in your downloads folder. It will be named something like jre-8u401-windows-x64.exe
6. Follow the on-screen instructions for installing Java
7. Now that 64-bit Java has been installed, you will be able to install the Java web app version of ACI Flex. This can be found on our ACI Flex ordering page: https://acilab.com/resources/ordering-software/ under Problems Launching?
8. Clicking the link will download the installer - it will be called launch.jnlp. Find this in your downloads folder and double click it to install!
--- Installing on Mac ---
Most macs come with Java pre-installed, so there is a good chance you already have it. However we will still want to double check!
1. On your mac, click the Apple icon in the top left of the screen and then click System Preferences
2. Look for the Java icon in the list of preferences. If it isn't there, that means it will need installed.
If you do see a Java icon, you can skip to step 7.
3. In your web browser navigate to https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
4. There are 2 versions of Java for mac, the one you want will depend on your macOS version.
- If you are unsure on your macOS version, this can be found by clicking the Apple icon in the top left of your screen and then clicking About This Mac
5. Find and open the java .dmg installer in your downloads folder. It will be named something like jre-8u401-macosx-x64.dmg OR jre-8u401-macosx-aarch64.dmg
6. Follow the on-screen instructions for installing Java
7. Now that 64-bit Java has been installed, you will be able to install the Java web app version of ACI Flex. This can be found on our ACI Flex ordering page: https://acilab.com/resources/ordering-software/ under Problems Launching?
8. Clicking the link will download the installer. Open a finder window and locate the file called launch.jnlp in your downloads folder
9. Because of Mac security measures, you can't simply double click the launch.jnlp file to install. Instead, you must right-click the file and in the options click Open. It will prompt you saying it's from an unrecognized/untrusted developer - you will want to click the button to open anyway.
